Abstract
Field works and literature survey on tafoni in West Coast of Korea revealed several findings and raised some questions. Many workers have attributed tafoni to diverse origins since 19th century; however, it seems they do not reach the conclusion yet. The consensus is that they result from salt from chemical weathering initiated along joints and fractures, especially those where water can reside. Remaining unsolved questions are as follows; firstly, whether tafoni are the result of sub-areal or under-ground weathering. Secondly, tafoni can indicate some climatic conditions of the past. Thirdly, basal rock properties such as crystalline silicate minerals can determine the development of tafoni. Fourthly, their distribution is limited to coastal areas with ample supply of sea salt and finally, the textural properties of host rock can control tafoni.
