이집트는 인류의 최고 고대 문명이 발생한 곳으로 늘 중동지역의 정치, 문화 중심지 역할을 하여왔다. 이슬람이 중동을 지배하게 된 후에도 중동 제일의곡창지대로서 정치, 문화 중심지 역할을 지속하였다. 특히 바그다드가 몽골에의하여 파괴되고, 이라크가 이슬람세계의 정치, 문화 중심지 역할을 할 수 없게 되자 이슬람 문명을 보존 유지하는 센터의 역할을 수행하였다. 그러나 16세기 오스만 제국의 속주가 된 후에 일시적으로 쇠퇴하여 인구가 줄고, 경제는피폐해진 후에 침체의 늪 속을 헤매었다. 그러고 나서 1798년 나폴레옹의 침입의 충격 속에 이집트는 급격히 무함마드 알리와 그의 후손들에 의하여 현대화의 길을 걸으면서 다시 한 번 중동의 정치, 문화 중심지가 된다. 그럼에도 이집트의 정치, 경제적 중요성과 함께 지니는 전략적 위치는 이집트를 세계 각지로 뻗어나가던 서구의 열강의 세력 각축장이 되어가게 만들었다. 이런 상황 속에서 1863-1879년 동안 세습 총독이었던 이스마일은 이집트를 중동의 프랑스와 같은 나라로 만들고자 이집트의 경제 능력을 고려하지 않고 무모하게 국가경영을 하다가 이집트의 국가 재정을 파산 상태로 몰아넣었으며, 이것은 영국과 프랑스를 중심으로 한 서구 열강들이 이집트 내정을 개입하게 유도했다. 이중에 영국에게 그들의 가장 중요한 식민지인 인도에 이르는 길목에 위치한 이집트의 전략적 가치는 지대하였으며, 어떤 다른 나라에게도 양보할 수 없는 중요한 땅이었다. 서구 열강의 개입은 처음에는 빚을 돌려받기 위한 재정 감독으로 시작되었으나, 그들의 이집트 내정 개입은 이집트 국민의 반발을 일으켰으며, 서구 열강에 저항하는 아흐마드 우라비를 중심으로 하는 민족주의 내각을출발시켰다. 아흐마드 우라비 내각은 서구 개입 정책을 거부했으며, 서구 세력을 이집트에서 축출하고자 하였다. 이와 같은 상황 속은 영국과 프랑스는 이집트 내정을 무력으로 정리하고자 하였다. 그러나 프랑스는 국내의 정치적 혼란속에 군사 개입을 할 수 없었으며, 이런 틈에 영국은 재빨리 단독으로 이집트를 침입하여 이집트를 점령하게 되었다.
Abstract
This paper begins with the British occupation of Egypt and continued until the end of the 1919 revolution. It deals the Egyptian occupation of Britain and the resurgence and growth of Egyptian nationalism, the Egypt and British rule in the First World War, the 1919 Revolution and the Egyptian independence struggle, the Egyptian independence and the result of the 1919 Revolution, the comparison of the Egyptian 1919 Revolution with Korean Samil Movement. From the course of this study, I will identify the traits of the 1919 revolution, which is the purpose of this paper, and present the examples of how past colonial nations resisted the colonial rule of the empires as well. In this way, the paper will clarify an important part of modern history in the Middle East. This paper will precisely exhibit the similarities and differences in comparison between the 1919 Revolution in Egypt and Korean Samil Movement which will help to grasp the 1919 Revolution from our standpoint.
