아동문학을 통한 영문학 교육의 위기극복 기여

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to show ways out of the present crisis in English literary studies through contributions made by childhood English literature. The present study was concerned with the current issues that result from critical problems in the pedagogy of English literary studies. The English departments in most Korean universities have a structural problem, whereby the officially named "Department of English Language and Literature," focuses on both literature and linguistics, but without cooperation between the two disciplines. English literacy studies and education have undergone various changes in terms of their traditional teaching fields and methods. Some Korean universities have been able to revise the canon and redraw boundaries. In order to help Korean college students' communicative competence while reading major works of English literature, Korean universities have required several innovative types of English courses based computer technology as well as cultural studies. However, it is unfortunately the fact that many Korean universities have stuck to the traditional curriculum for many decades. In addition to instructing students in the pursuit of humanistic knowledge, to satisfy students' needs the curricula of Korean university English departments have to open and expand the canon and also to create a new curriculum that considers mass communication, the art, social science, and film. In conclusion, English literary education in Korea should be implemented in a student-centered way in order to improve their humanism and to overcome the crisis of English literary education through teaching and learning childhood English literature.
