Abstract
Towards the end of The Well-Beloved, the artist hero Pierston is disil-lusioned after all his failures, so much so that he decides that he willnever again see his atelier. His name subsequently appears on the retiredlist of Academicians, and he takes interest in a more “utilitarian” work, which manifests itself in closing “old natural fountains” and demolish-ing “old Elizabethan cottages” seasoned with romantic aura and lovingmemories. Precisely for this reason, not surprisingly, all the critics assertin unison that Pierston completely loses his artistic romanticism.
