초록
Gabriel Egan’s Shakespeare and Ecocritical Theory is a handy guide book for literature students. In the book Egan surveys a short history of the theory and then applies the main tenets of the theory to the practical analysis of Shakespearean plays, mainly focused on the comedies and late romance plays. His departing point is from the Gaia hypothesis that unites the organic matter andthe inorganic into the collective activity we call life. Egan retrieves the Tillyardian world picture to the presentist Shakespeare. However, in textual practice Egan repeats regretfullythe traditional theme of nature against art. And in the analogical and long-term perspective of Egan’s geophysiology and ecological holism, the importance of a particular singularity has the danger of losing itself in the whole. As a whole the book wants some further penetration into the politics of ecocritical theory, as is shown in ecofeminist theory.
