Abstract
Euen Hyuk (Sarah) Jung· Kyung-min Ahn (Yonsei U)This study aims to investigate the pragmatic features of Korean EFLlearners interlanguage in the communicative act of complaining. Since acomplaint, by its nature, is likely to cause offence, thereby threatening thesocial relationship between the speaker and the hearer, making a complaintin a polite manner is of crucial importance in maintaining harmonious socialrelationships. However, very little research has been carried out on the com-plaint speech act performances of Korean EFL learners. In particular, stud-ies which attempt to examine the effect of social status on the choice ofcomplaint speech act strategies are rare. The present study compared thecomplaint speech act performances of Korean EFL learners and those ofnative speakers of English with respect to social status. 24 Korean EFLlearners and 28 native speakers of English participated and the data werecollected via a Discourse Completion Test. The findings revealed thatKorean EFL learners differed from native English speakers in the use ofcomplaint strategies. These results indicate that Korean EFL learners lackcertain important skills necessary to make complaints appropriately, sug-gesting the need for the foreign language learners to develop a more exten-sive pragmatic knowledge of complaint strategies.
