Abstract

Chung Yak-yong (1762-1836) lived in Kangjin area for 18 years as a exiles. He left many Buddhist related texts during the period. Of these, less than a quarter of the total was included in the collection. This shows that a kind of self-censorship was done. In this paper, we will examine several aspects of such self-censorship. Generally speaking, self-censorship is a kind of disguise and concealment behaviors done to avoid social disadvantage, sanctions, or accusations. That aspect is the act of eliminating or correcting sentences with concerns of problems. In this article, I looked at the patterns of self-censorship of Buddhist related texts over three layers of correction, substitution, and dropout. Correction is expressed in a way of telling and concealing, and the substitution shows the desire to be revealed by hiding. And Dropout is an attitude to create that it did not act itself by eliminating completely. He could not help but be conscious of the disadvantages that his writings, which had been friendly to the Buddhism that belonged to the exclusionary value domain at that time, could bring. So he removed his writings about Buddhism from his collection. In addition, even if it is inevitable, the problematic parts are corrected. And He also borrowed the name of someone else to hide the fact that he wrote it himself. What can not be overlooked here is how self-censorship works on Buddhist texts. In terms of self-censorship, it is possible to compare the manuscripts before censorship and after censorship together. However, it is not uncommon to see that both remain. It is because the Buddhist temples and monks kept them carefully, even though he excluded the texts he wrote about Buddhism. it is possible to look around Chung Yak-yong's self-censored face. I have excavated and organized a very large amount of Buddhism- related tests which is missing in the collection through extensive data collection work, so I was able to proceed with such work. Chung Yak-yong then wrote at the request of the then time. Then, in order to prevent problems that may arise later, various types of concealment and detouring censorship mechanisms were activated. In this paper, we give a concrete example of each case and examined its meaning. He had a deep understanding and a critical awareness of Buddhism, but the voice of criticism does not appear conspicuously in his first writings. He intentionally added critical comments to some of the articles in the collection. And sometimes he used to be a writer, not a self, according to his strategic judgment. In addition, many of the writings he wrote were misinterpreted as self-censored as he thought it was a joke. There are many other articles written by Jung, Yak-Yong missing in the collection. There is a need to continually review the principles of self-censorship in his writings, including these articles.
