Abstract

This study is to confirm where and how many Hojukjungchos exist in Jeju Island and to examine whether they are valuable as historical data. There are many Hojukjungchos left on Jeju Island enough to be called a treasure house of Hojukjungcho. Here we will introduce Hojukjungchos of Daepori, Dongsungri, Duksuri, Sagaeri, Ilgwari, Wolpyungri, Jungmunri, Hamosulri, Hawonri and Hwoesuri. These villages were governed by Dajunghyun in Chosun dynasty when Jeju Island was divided into three administrative organizations: Jejumok, Daejunghyun and Jungiyhyun. Therefore, most Hojukjungchos in Jeju Island have been found in the areas of Daejunghyun except for Hojukjungchos found in the villages of Doduri, Jangjunri, Jungumri and Sanggari, which were governed by Jejumok in Chosun dynasty. Hojukjungchos range from the late 18th century to early 20th century. They are very valuable historical data in that Hojukjungchos, which were written every 3 years, have contributed to shedding light on the diverse aspects of Jeju society at that time. We can confirm the family system, the social status system, slavery, population movement and the existing form of residents in the areas of Jeju Island in the late Chosun Dynasty through Hojukjungchos. When Hojukjungchos are analyzed in comparison with the data in Minjukbu(민적부), we can verify the population in the pre-modern period and various characteristics appearing in the transfer to the modern period.
