‘-니’ 통합형 어미의 문법화 양상

본고는 선행연구에서 ‘종결어미 + 하니’와 같은 인용문 구성에서 문법화 된 것으로 추정한 ‘-다니, -라니, -자니, -냐니, -더라니, -노라니’ 구문과 여기에 ‘-려니’ 구문을 추가하여 그 문법화 양상을 통시적으로 고찰하였다. 그 결과 ‘-다니, -라니, -자니’의 경우 근대 국어 자료에서 이미 하나의 문법화 된 어미로 쓰였음을 확인하였고, 특히 ‘-자니’는 본래 청유의 의미가 아닌 동작 주체의 욕망이나 의도, 목적의 의미기능을 가졌던 것으로 파악하였다. ‘-더라니’는 다른 사람의 말이 아닌 화자 자신의 과거 경험을 새롭게 환기하는 의미를 갖는 것으로 20세기 초에 종결어미로 사용된 예가 보이는 바 그 문법화 시기는 대략 19세기경으로 추정된다. 이들은 공통적으로 화자가 어떤 사실을 깨닫게 되면서 그에 대한 놀람이나, 분개, 한탄 등의 감정을 드러낸다. ‘-노라니’는 종래의 연구와는 달리 인용문 구성에서가 아닌, 연결어미 ‘-노라’에 ‘ᄒᆞ니’가 결합된 구성에서 축약의 과정을 통해 문법화 된 것으로 보았다. 이는 다른 종결어미와는 다르게 ‘-노라니’의 경우는 현대 국어에서 ‘-노라 하니’ 문형으로 환원되는 예가 발견되지 않고 중세시대부터 사용된 의도나 목적의 뜻을 나타내는 ‘-노라( > -느라)의 예가 발견되기 때문이다. 이는 의도나 목적의 뜻을 나타내는 연결어미 ’-려‘에 ’ᄒᆞ니‘가 결합하여 축약된 것으로 보이는 단순 통합형 어미 ’-려니‘를 고려할 때 더욱 그러하다. 마지막으로 본고는 연결어미 ’-니‘가 후행절이 생략된 채로 ’ᄒᆞ다‘ 동사에 의한 인용문을 형성하거나, ’ᄒᆞ되‘와 같은 활용형이 상투적으로 결합하여 피인용절을 이끄는 구문 등을 통해 ’-니‘가 사실상 의미상으로 종결어미와 같은 기능을 수행하였음을 고찰하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the grammaticalization of the compounding endings with ‘-ni’, such as ‘-tani, -lani, -jani, -nyani’, -tərani, -norani’ and ‘-lyəni’. The compounding endings, ‘-tani, -lani, -jani, -nyani’, -tərani,’ were formed from the quotation structure as ‘final ending(-ta, -la, -ja, -nya, -təra) + ha(do)- + conjunctive ending –ni’ and they underwent grammaticalization by the process of contraction and fusion. Therefore, the fused endings semantically gain new meanings that show emotions of a speaker about utterance or recollections of his/her past experiences instead of quotation meaning. Also the endings, except ‘-jani’ relating to a speaker’s personal desire or intention, are used as a final ending in Contemporary Korean. This paper showed that ‘-tani’, ‘-lani’ and ‘-jani’ function as a fused ending in Modern Korean. The endings, ‘-tani’ and ‘-jani’, were used as a final ending in 18th and 17th century, respectively. Therefore, it is assumed that at least these two endings underwent the grammaticalization even at an earlier stage. However, ‘-tərani’ was found in the early 20th century, so it is assumed to be undergone grammaticalization in the 19th century. This paper assumes that ending ‘-norani’ was not formed from the quotation structure as other researchers proposed, but the structure of ‘-nora + hani-’ in which ‘-nora’ was a conjunctive ending expressing speaker’s intention or goal. This is based on the facts that there is no construction of ‘-norani’ that can recover the element of contraction and there are many examples of ‘-nora’ functioning as a conjunctive ending in 15th-19th centuries, unlike the construction of the other endings. Also, it is considered that ‘-norani’ has the similar meaning to compounding ending ‘-lyəni’ which is easily divided into a conjunctive ending ‘-lyə’ expressing a speaker’s intention or goal and ’(ha)ni’. Unlike ‘-norani’, it has not undergone the grammaticalization. Finally, this paper shows that conjunctive ending ‘-ni’ can function as a final ending in several respects, including a ‘-ni’ clause with reduction of a following clause in a quotation construction.
