Abstract
The current study reports on an investigation into the relationship of test-takers’ use of test-taking strategies to EFL reading test performance. Participants were 128 students enrolled in a basic English course of reading comprehension skills at two universities. They took a 33-item, multiple-choice reading comprehension achievement test before answering a 17-item test-taking strategy questionnaire. The results revealed that (1) the reasoning type of test-taking strategies had a positive relationship to the reading test performance; (2) test-takers’ reading test performance across the question types of the reading test was somewhat different, depending upon their reading ability levels; (3) irrespective of their reading ability levels, they attained higher mean frequencies in the two strategy types of reasoning and managing than in the other type of guessing; (4) the three question types had a positive effect on reading test performance regardless of their reading ability levels; and (5) only the reasoning strategy type other than the other two types had a positive effect on reading test performance particularly for high-level readers. The present study reached the conclusion that the use of test-taking strategies, the reasoning strategies in particular, could render an account of variation on EFL reading test performance.
