초록

This study reports the findings of an investigation into the comprehension abilities of Korean EFL university students in American English and British English. Witnessing the dominance of American English in Korean English classrooms and its society and assuming that the linguistically biased English education phenomena has negative impacts on Korean EFL learners' listening comprehension in British English, still less other varieties of English, the researcher examined the issue of how different they would be in aurally comprehending two major English varieties. Data were collected from three rounds of experiments during which three groups consisting of 116 Korean university students listened to American English and British English and then they were given listening comprehension tests. The result of the comprehension tests revealed that all of the three groups, irrespective of English language proficiency levels, performed better in American English than in British English. This implies that Korean EFL learners are more accustomed to and more familiar with American English rather than British English and other varieties of English. The paper concludes with several suggestions to improve the linguistically biased English education phenomenon.
