초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the transferability of synchronous English text-based computer-mediated communication (CMC) activity to face-to-face oral performance. The participants of the study are 23 EFL learners at a university in Seoul, Korea. The analyses of the study are based on 23 sets of video-recorded English proficiency tests, pre-task writing assignment files for measuring idea units, chat scripts, and face-to-face group oral performance transcripts. The study is distinguished from the previous research in that it employed Nvivo and corpus analysis tools and focused on the in-depth qualitative analysis of the data. The major findings of the present study are as follows: first, the text-based CMC activity was significantly effective in helping participants to generate more propositions, use more diverse and wide range of vocabulary, and produce more complex sentences. Second, the transferability of the text-based chatting activity to oral performance turns out to be significantly successful in all three aspects of language such as vocabulary, syntax, and semantics. Third, the text-based CMC activity is more effective to low proficiency level participants than to high proficiency level ones. These findings lend support to the positive effect of English text-based CMC activity on oral performance.
