Discussion Ability Development Between CMC Group and Non CMC Group

Abstract

The intent of this study is to investigate the role of schema in improving oral proficiency, especially discussion ability. And this is also intended to compare and analyze the achievement results for identical discussion courses offered in two delivery modes: Computer mediated communication (CMC) adopted instruction and face-to-face instruction. Achievement results for both modes include gain scores (difference between pre-test and post-test of oral proficiency) of G-TELP and Type-Token Ratio (TTR) focusing on discussion ability and interaction pattern. These achievement results show that in both groups, general oral proficiency and discussion ability are improved. It means schema plays an important role in developing oral proficiency, especially discussion ability. In addition, in the CMC adopted group two components of TTR show significant development in discussion ability. Finally, when it comes to initiation of discourse, the CMC group presents a significant difference. This means CMC adopted instruction can give more benefits to learners to improve their discussion ability.
