Abstract
This study primarily investigated the sources of new words and the themes and parts of speech that emerged in students’ L2 vocabulary self-collection. Seventy two mixed major college EFL students aged 19-27 were the subjects. The data corpus was derived from vocabulary lists in which the students were to record (1) each word found, (2) syntactic category of the word, (3) the definition as perceived, (4) the context in which the word was encountered, and (5) the source. Each individual was expected to bring 20 new words from the real world. The results revealed that words were drawn from all fields of the subjects’ lives. Written texts were a major source for incidental L2 vocabulary learning in that authentic materials (especially journals and magazines) appeared to be the most salient. However, a variety of nonreading sources along with Internet made a great contribution as well. Nouns (46.9%) were most common, followed by verbs (28.8%), adjectives (20.8%), and adverbs (3.5%). The themes emerged in the corpus were varied according to parts of speech. Implications of the findings for EFL classrooms are discussed.
