Abstract

This paper investigates research methodology and orientation in TEFL in Korea and around the world in an effort to project the future directions of TEFL studies and practices in Korea. For the study, the research articles published in English Teaching and TESOL Quarterly in the past 14 years are analyzed and compared in terms of research methodology and orientation progress. The comparative analysis reveals that English Teaching employs more quantitative and less qualitative methodology, in particular less ethnography and narrative research, while TESOL Quarterly employs more qualitative methodology than quantitative methodology. The analysis also reveals that descriptive orientations are overdominant in English Teaching, while TESOL Quarterly shows a gradual emphasis on interpretive and ideological orientations. On the basis of the analysis, the future directions for TEFL studies and practices in Korea are also suggested.
