Abstract
This Paper explores the metaphoric extensions of ‘light’ and ‘color’ in Korean to reveal how Korean language users understand and use the concepts of LIGHT and COLOR. The concepts of LIGHT and COLOR are related to each other. Various metaphors work in the extensions of the two concepts. Among those metaphors are COLOR IS LIGHT, HOPE IS LIGHT, MENTAL STATE IS COLOR, PROPERTY IS COLOR, VALUE IS LIGHT, SEX IS COLOR, etc. These metaphors are cognitively correlated, showing that the various senses of 'light' and 'color' form a semantic network. This research validates cognitive processes by which language users understand abstract concepts in terms of concrete concepts. Also, those light and color metaphors are of experiential basis, for they are motivated by physical experiences of Korean language users.
