Abstract
Jeon, Youngok. 2007. A Study on ‘kuliko’ in Spoken Korean and Written Korean. Discourse and Cognition 14.2, 217-248. In this study, I identified the difference in connective forms and semantic function of ‘kuliko’ between spoken Korean and written Korean. In terms of connective forms, ‘kuliko’ was used more as a connective adverb between words, phrases, and sentences in written Korean, while it was used more as a connective adverb between clauses, sentences, and small topic units in spoken Korean. Such a difference in connective forms influences on semantic functions. While the meaning of 'kuliko' in written Korean is 'an array of informations', the meaning of 'kuliko' in spoken Korean is 'an addition of informations'. In written Korean where it connected words or phrases, it completes the sentence or makes a paragraph by listing items at the same level. In spoken Korean where it connected units beyond the level of sentences, it did not only list items at the same level but also transits topics or changed topics. In addition, I found the cases where the first item was only discovered without the second item in spoken Korean. In these cases, ‘kuliko’ has the function to take or maintain turn.
