The purpose of this study is to explore the basic concept, aspects, and semantic properties of perspective reversal phenomena (PRP) from the cognitive linguistic viewpoint. The findings, gleaned from extensive reading of professional literature, language corpora, and other sources, are as follows: First, PRP refer to the opposition of conceptualizers’ perspectives in the construal of a scene or situation. PRP appearing in linguistic expressions are based on form-perception or stage models. Second, there are four typical aspects of PRP in the Korean language: i) ‘figure and ground’ (e.g. active/passive) ii) ‘objectivity and subjectivity’ (e.g. objective/ subjective motion) iii) ‘speaker and hearer’ (e.g. deictic verb, honorification) and iv) ‘affirmation and negation’ (opposing construals of the same event). Third, the semantic properties of PRP originate in the opposite structures of the object world, and reveal the conceptualizers’ cognitive ability by identifying their cognitive tendencies and strategies. Restrictions and degrees of symmetry of PRP serve as reference points for choosing perspectives, and are significant in that they help researchers to understand the correlation of human cognitive ability and linguistic structures.
