초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the polysemization of mal- in the image-schematic theory of cognitive linguistics. There are two aspects of symmetric/asymmetric image schemas in the prototypical meaning of mal-. Here, the symmetric image schema shares certain meanings with anh-. It is when mal- is combined with nouns or occurs in repetitive ending constructions that such a symmetric image schema is reflected. To the contrary, the auxiliary verb -ci mal- reflects the asymmetric image schema between [+action area] and [-action area]. Here, -ci mal- has the meaning of ‘ban’ as it [+excludes] the [+action area] of the main verb. Also, the auxiliary verb -ko mal- forms a boundary of [+action area], and hence the agent goes through and enter that. Due to such aspects, modal meanings like strong will, regret etc. are derived. Hacamaca also reflects the asymmetric image schema. It reflects the image schema of going through the boundary, entering the [+action area], and then quickly escaping from that to shift to the [-action area] of a new phase. Thus, it has the meaning of ‘quick conversion of action.’
