Abstract

Among the cornponents of Korean sentences, the independent components has been considered not to have special grammatical functions by many scholars. However, as a result of the investigation of the subcategorization of each independent components, it is revealed that they have considerable grammatical functions. Vocatives and exclamatory words with the semantic feature [+reality] is found to realize the function of holding the speakers in reverence, while subjects and vocatives with co-indexcs have the syntactic structures which constrain the subjects. When a subject is a pro-word which has as its antecedent a thematic word with the semantic feature [+human], it realizes the function of holding the subject in reverence; when the pro-word is used as an object, it realizes the function of holding the object in reverence. Thematic wards in the sentences which contain topical words have the syntactic structures of c- commanding the topical wards, And linking words, connecting the propositional meaning of preceding sentences with those of following sentences, are related to postpositions which decide the propositional meanings of the following sentences.
