Abstract

his paper points out a few problems in the present Hanguˇl Orthography. There has been much dispute over various articles of the Hanguˇl Orthography which has been put in force since 1988. Even if one concedes to accept the arguments of the proponents of the present regulations, problems are still found in the Hanguˇl orthography. Section 2 suggests that the Hanguˇl Orthography should be established focused on exceptions rather than following the principle of phonemic writing. In that sense, one should differentiate what can be prescribed in the Korean orthography from what can be prescribed in the standard Korean pronunciation. We find sometimes more than 2 articles are devised to explain the same word. Some articles seem to be closely related that they might as well be unified into a single article. Section 3 discusses these articles. Section 4 is about clearness of the articles. Some articles seem to be unclear in their meaning. Section 5 talks about inappropriate examples and their order. Finally, in section 6, we point out that some regulations of the Hanguˇl Orthography are contradictory to those of the Standard Korean Pronunciation.
