Abstract

The language differences of South Korea and North Korea mostly orginates in vocabulary differences. This paper aims to observe the vocabulary differeces, especially loanwords in North Korea(NK). This paper is summarized as follows; (1) North Korea replaced 50,000 loanwords with Korean-origin words, from 1964 to 1982. (2) Half of 50,000 newborn Korean-origin words were restored to loanwords in 1986. (3) We find that loanwords in North Korea are different in the aspect of an actual use, by investigating loanwords in <Jo-Seon-Mal-Dae-Sa-Jeon 조선말대사전>(1992). (4) That is, some loanwords are used widely, and others are not used so widely. We can try to divide loanwords in Nporth Korea into six classes.loanwords that mark ‘the Korean-origin word’ is labelledloanwords that mark ⇒ is labelledloanwords that mark → is labelledloanwords that mark = is labelledloanwords that mark ⓧ is labelledloanwords that any mark is not labelled (5) In particular, loanwords from English are more common in North Korea than loanwords from any other languages. (6) We also find that the aspects of loanwords in North Korea are not fixed by comparing loanwords in <Jo-Seon-Mal-Dae-Sa-Jeon 조선말대사전>(1992) with loanwords in <Hyeon-Dae-Jo-Seon-Mal-Sa-Jeon 현대조선말사전>(1981).
