Abstract
This paper first presents how the corpus of Korean weather news, which is a sublanguage in the Korean language, is collected and what the corpus consists of. By using real example sentences from the corpus, an explanation of the differences between Korean weather news and English weather bulletins is given. On the basis of the collected corpus, the characteristics of Korean weather news are also presented. Since a sublanguage can be a good input of machine translation, several matters that must be considered in translating the sublanguage of Korean weather news into English on a computer are discussed in depth and then possible solutions are suggested. In addition, the modules and translation procedures related to the transfer-based system that will translate the sublanguage analyzed in this paper into English appropriately are explained. Therefore, this paper lays a stepping stone for constructing such a machine translation system.
