초록

This paper argues that Korean sentence-formation should be based upon the priniple of constituent-addition, rather than that of constituent-insertion. This claim derives from the fact that many Korean utterance-sentences (in particular, conversational data)show absence of seemingly argument-NPs. The traditional way of interpreting this phenomenon is ellipsis, which means that the obligatory arguments are elided from structural or pragmatic-contextual reasons. On the basis of several pieces of evidence,in Korean, actants that are required for the lexical definition of a lexeme (a verb)are argued in the paper to be non-obligatory; they are entities that are added when necessary. In other words, they are actualized to the sentence not by the grammar rule, but by the speaker's communicative need or intention. The syntactic principle for the sentence-formation is termed "framed syntax" for English or Russian, and contrastingly "agglutinative syntax" for Korean.
