시간에 관한 비유 연구- ‘앞/뒤’ 관련 표현을 중심으로-

초록

본 연구의 목적은 시간의 경과나 시간적 위치가 공간적 이동이나 방향과 관련되는 표현들에 의해 개념화되는 현상에 대해 살펴보는 데 있다. 본고에서 논의한 바를 요약하여 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국어의 ‘앞/뒤’와 관련한 시간 개념화의 구체적인 실현 양상은 ‘시간 참조점’과 ‘자아 참조점’ 은유에 의해 설명될 수 있다. ‘시간 참조점’ 은유는 (다른) 시간을 참조점으로 하며, ‘앞’은 ‘먼저’를, 그리고 ‘뒤’는 ‘나중’을 개념화한다. 반면 ‘자아 참조점’은 ‘자아의 앞’이 ‘미래’를, 그리고 ‘자아의 뒤’는 ‘과거’를, 그리고 같은 위치는 ‘현재’를 개념화한다. 둘째, ‘앞으로 한 달 뒤에 …’에서 보듯이, ‘앞’과 ‘뒤’가 모두 미래 상황에 쓰일 수 있는데, 전자는 자아 참조점, 그리고 후자는 시간 참조점 은유에 의한 것이다. 그러나 양자가 임의로 바뀌어 쓰일 수 있는 것은 아니다. 셋째, 사건의 시간적 위치를 나타내는 표현은 선행 연구에서 ‘자아 이동’으로 설명되었으나, 자아와 무관할 뿐만 아니라, 시간 참조점 은유에 의한 표현만 가능하므로, ‘시간 참조점’ 은유로 간주되는 것이 합리적이다. 넷째, 선행 연구에서 ‘미래 방향으로의 시간 이동’의 가능성이 제기된 바 있으나, 그 근거로 제시된 예들은 환유나 개념적 혼성 등의 기제로 설명할 수 있거나, ‘시간 경과는 이동’ 은유가 아닌 다른 개념적 은유에 의한 표현으로 볼 수 있다는 점에서 재고될 필요가 있다. 다섯째, ‘비디오를 앞으로 돌려 보세요’와 같은 예에서 ‘앞’은 공간적 의미로 해석되는 경우 대상 자체의 진행 방향을 뜻하며, 시간적 의미로 해석되는 경우 ‘먼저’의 의미로 해석된다.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explain the uses of Korean spatial terms ‘ap’(front) and ‘dwi’(back) for conceptualizing time. The results are as follows: First, in ego-RP metaphor ‘ap’ means ‘future’ and ‘dwi’ means ‘past’, but in time-RP metaphor ‘ap’ means ‘earlier’ and ‘dwi’ means ‘later’. Second, some uses of ‘ap/dwi’ are not the same as other languages, in that Korean expressions corresponding to ‘forward two days’ in “The next Wednesday’s meeting has been moved forward two days.” can mean 1) ‘two days after the utterance time’, 2) ‘two days before the scheduled time’, but does not mean ‘two days after the scheduled time’. Third, we need to add to mappings in time-RP metaphor the relations of ‘simultaneity’ and ‘inclusion’, in order to explain the cases like “The execution occurred at 10:06 P.M.”, “He ran a mile in five minutes.”, which are often classified as moving ego metaphor in spite of there being no reference to ego. Finally, expressions that are claimed to result from conceptualizing time moving from past to future can be explained by metonymy, conceptual blending, or other metaphors. This suggests time is conceptualized as moving from future to past, but not the reverse.
