Abstract

While Brecht has positive influence on the feminist theatre artists, he also seems to have ambiguous relationship with them due to his patriarchal gender divisions, and stereotypical female characters throughout his works. Thus his work demands feminist artists and critiques to discern and deconstruct his patriarchal assumptions and search for new ways to suggest and affrim new possibilities for feminine subjectivity. Mother Courage and her Children is not an exception in that while it reflects the traditional gender divisions and stereotypes, the female characters do have subversitive potentials. This paper explores three Korean adaptations of Mother Courage and Her Children focusing on how Brecht’s patriarchal assumptions and ideologies are transformed and/or corrected when they go through an intercultural process of interpretation and re-creation. Each of the three adaptations react to Brecht’s assumptions differently. Street Theatre Troupe’s Mother Courage and Her Children adopts the original works patriarchal expression, receiving them within Korean patriarchal tradition, repeating and affirming the existent patriarchal ideology. The Woman, Mother Courage, in spite of some parts of its narrative depending on the traditional sex roles, expresses feminine sexuality and identities in new ways. Courage in Ukchukga is portrayed as a woman who not only chooses her names and ways of life, but changes and matures as an ethical subject, expanding the possibilities of female subjectivity and identities.
