Abstract

In this paper, I aim to examine Korean accent studies which have been mainly concentrated on modern Seoul dialect. The next three points are considered : i) general definition of accent ii) phonetic nature of Korean accent iii ) rule of accent assignment. Firstly, researchers show different opinions about the definition of accent, according as which part, speaker or hearer, must be considered. Secondly, on the phonetic nature of Korean accent, complex accent theory is being opposed to pitch accent theory. We can conceive that it might be caused by several different elements of the experiments. Thirdly, (Phonological) Phrases including words in citation form are regarded as the domain of accent assignment. But the accent assignment rules are very different from one another. I think it can be overcome by establishing the formal definition of accent and the analysing method.
