Abstract

Control involves not only structural configuration but also intrinsic properties of the predicate and other semantic and pragmatic considerations particularly in the choice of the controller. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the thematic conditions on the predicate-arguments structures and to argue for the pragmatic account of control in terms of the conventional and conversational implicatures. In section 2, it is argued that both obligatory control and non-obligatory control cannot be explained well in terms of the thematic conditions on the argument structures. It is also pointed out that the pragmatic considerations are needed. In section 3, it is argued that they may be better explained by pragmatic implicature. The controllers in obligatory control structures are interpreted as conventional implicatures and those of non-obligatory control structures are interpreted as conversational implicatures.
