Abstract

It is well known that geriericity concerns the distinction between s(tage)-level and i(ndividual)-level predicates(Carlson 1977, Diesing 1992 among others). And it has been pointed out that the topic particle nun is closely related to generic sentences in Korean (Y. Lee 1984, I. Lee 1992, C. Lee 1996 among others). So, in this paper, I investigate Korean generic sentences with respect to s-level/i -level predicates and topic/subject particles, and provide the following four types of Korean generic sentences: a. NP-nun + i-level predicate -> lexical characterizing sentence b. NP-ka + i-level predicate -> lexical characterizing sentence c. NP-nun + s-level predicate -> habitual sentence d. NP,-ka + s-level predicate -> habitual sentence Note that the subject particle ka is included in the discussion of Korean generic sentences. This particle has seldom been considered to be allowed in Korean generic sentences. Elements marked by this particle receive both a generic force and a focus, distinguished from nun-marked elements which receive a generic force but not a focus.
