Abstract
Traditionally, the `adjective root + i` type construction has been treated as derived adverbs and the morpheme `i` in point as adverb-deriving suffix. This kind of analyses have big limits in explaining power and coverage of data. One of the evidences of this evaluation comes from the fact that some of the `i`-derived adverbs still can have their own internal arguments. Thus, they raise difficulties in practical implementation for text processing systems such as Korean syntactic parser. In other words, these argument-carrying adverbial constructions raise the issue whether adverbs can have arguments of their own or not. This paper argues that the so-called adverb-deriving suffix `i` should be described as an equivalent to the Korean verbal endings, and that this alternative analysis can achieve linguistically significant generalization on the one hand, and resolve the implementation difficulties on the other hand. As the evidences for the argument, this paper presents the following facts; 1) the status of the medieval correspondent of the modern `i`, 2) the parallelism between the `i` constructions and the `ge` constructions, 3) the `i` constructions as complements, 4) the productivity of the `i` morpheme.
