Abstract
This paper is concerned with the semantic and pragmatic nature of the topic-marked phrases of KTCs in various contexts and the explication of their contributions to the meaning of the sentences in which they occur. I first define sentence topic as setting a context in which the referent of a topic-marked phrase is a sufficiently salient entity in the conversational record at the time of utterance, and argues that the overt topic-marker -nun is a linguistic device encoding this context-setting function of sentence topic. Based on the proposed definition, I propose a unified analysis of KTCs that subsumes some underlying insights of the old-new information view, the aboutness view, and the presuppositionally backgrounded information view. On this analysis, the theme-presentation use and the theme-presentation+contrastiveness use require the entity denoted by a topic-marked phrase to be the most salient, and the contrastiveness use merely requires it to be salient to a certain degree. Our record-based treatment of KTCs easily incorporates the underlying insights of the two descriptive conditions on the use of KTCs, i.e. the context compatibility condition that the theme-presentation use of the KTCs requires that the referent of a topic-marked NP is already registered in the domain of discourse at the time of utterance and the restricting condition that the use of a KTC requires its proposition to be exclusively associated with the referent of a topic-marked phrase.
