Abstract
This study provides an account on the meaning of contrastive topic occurring as the sole focus of a sentence. It is generally assumed that contrastive topic requires a main focus in the rest of the sentence but there is a case where a contrastive topic itself can function as the main focus. A reason of why this should be the case is provided. By treating a contrastive topic as a focus occurring in an antecedent clause of an implicational logical structure, this study shows that a contrastive topic can serve as the main answer to a polarity question as the sole focus, just like an if-clause can. It is also shown that a categorical approach to the meaning of questions (Hiz 1978, Krifka 1999, 2001) is more suitable than the alternative semantics analysis (Rooth 1985, Bring 1999, 2003) for a better account of the behaviour of this type of contrastive topic.
