인형은 인간의 형상을 가지고 있거나 사물을 의인화하는 것으로부터 출발한다. 예로부터 인형은 종교적 의식과 우리의 삶의 문화 속에서 인간과 밀접한 관계를 맺어 왔으며, 세계의 다양한 민족과 문화 속에서 친숙한 물체로 존재했다. 인형은 우리나라의 예술과 학문 분야에서 하위와 비주류로 인식되어 주목받지 못했지만 최근 민속이나 교육, 의학, 예술치료 등의 여러 학문 분야에 걸쳐 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 또한 인형의 이미지도 아동과 희극적 인물이라는 전통적인 형태에서 벗어나 연극의 중요한 표현 도구로 이용되고 있다. 따라서 인형극이라는 한정된 범위의 연구에서 벗어나 인형이 가진 본질적 의미와 인형의 예술적 표현 같은 전문적이고 심층적인 연구가 필요하다. 최근 우리나라의 공연에서도 인형극과 연극의 경계를 넘나드는 시도가 늘어나고 있다. 그러므로 인형이 가진 여러 의미와 전통적인 방식의 인형극에 대한 연구는 물론 현대연극에서 미학적이며, 극적 요소로 사용되는 인형에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본고는 인형의 본질을 규명하고 삶과 죽음이 공존하는 인형의 특성을 논의하면서 활용 방안을 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 물체로서의 인형, 배우로서의 인형 그리고 교육과 치료에서 유용한 도구로 활용되는 세 가지 차원을 중심으로 살펴본다. 아울러 통합적인 관점에서 인형의 의미와 가치를 인식하고 교육과 치료의 가능성까지 제시한다는 점에서 본 논문의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
Abstract
In Korea, Puppet did not come into much attention in the fields of arts and academia as it has been perceived as part of the subordinate and non-mainstream culture, but it is currently a subject of research in the fields of folklore, education, medicine, art therapy, etc. Moreover, the image of puppet is usedas an important expressive device in theater, in a departure from traditional forms of juvenile and comical figures. Therefore, professional and in-depth studies on the substantial significance and artistic expressions of puppet, out of the limited scope of research, is necessary. Recently, there are increasingly more attempts to cross over the boundaries between puppetry and theater in Korean theatrical arts. Accordingly, studies on puppet as an aesthetic and dramatic element in the modern theater is needed as well as the studies on different significance of puppet and its traditional forms. This study discusses the essence and characteristics of puppet in three dimensions—puppets as objects, puppets as actors, and puppets as useful devices in education and therapy—and takes a look into measures to utilize it. The study also holds significance in that it helps recognize the meaning and value of puppet and suggests the potentials in education and therapy from an integrated point of view.
