초록
This paper provides a syntactic analysis of sikhita-causatives in Korean. The argument structure of a sikhita construction changes depending on the semantic type of the verbal noun root it merges with. When combined with a root that expresses a result-state meaning, the sikhita-causative adopts a two-place argument structure, meaning ‘to make something happen’ (make-causatives). However, when paired with a root that expresses manner, it takes a three-place argument structure, meaning ‘to make someone do something’ (let-causatives). These variations in causative patterns based on root semantics are explained by the syntactic structure, where sikhita, acting as a verbalizer, merges directly with the root to form a single phasal unit. In contrast, in constructions where sikhita functions as a lexical verb, there is no variation in argument structure based on the verbal noun's semantic type. This difference is explained by a syntactic structure in which the verbal noun, independent of sikhita, forms its own phasal unit without any interaction between them.
