Abstract

In this study, composite coatings were fabricated on Al6061 alloy substrates by first forming either hard anodized or plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) layers, followed by the deposition of a Y2O3 thermal spray coating. The Y2O3 top coating displayed higher hardness when applied over the PEO layer (529 HV) compared to the hard anodized layer (425 HV), which is attributed to the formation of a denser Y2O3 coating. The adhesion strength of the Y2O3 coating was 4.49 MPa for the PEO-based specimen, approximately 18% higher than that of the hard anodized specimen (3.82 MPa), likely due to the presence of large size pores in the PEO layer enhancing mechanical interlocking. In terms of dielectric strength, the composite coating on the PEO layer exhibited a significantly higher breakdown voltage (5.297 kV) than that on the hard anodized layer (4.145 kV), representing an approximate 29% improvement.
