초록

Silkworm genetic resources are essential biological assets with national importance. Understanding their traits is pivotal for establishing effective conservation management strategies and exploring their potential for future industrial applications. In the present study, we systematically investigated the rearing and cocoon traits of 49 silkworm genetic resources preserved in Republic of Korea. The results revealed significant variability in these traits among the investigated genetic resources. The average larval period was 23.80 days, ranging from 20.21 to 27.22 days. The weight of 5th instar larvae averaged 1.92 g on day 3, ranging from 1.00 g to 2.58 g, and increased to an average of 2.80 g on day 7, with a range of 1.93 g to 4.03 g. The pupation rate averaged 89.64%, exhibiting variability from 35.6% to 100%. Notably, the assessment of cocoon color performed using a colorimeter enabled a quantification of subtle color differences for the first time. These findings contribute to our understanding on the diverse characteristics of silkworm genetic resources, enhance the sustainability of the silkworm industry, and underscore the importance of their conservation management.
