Abstract
De-NOx techniques such as Selective Catalytic Reduction(SCR), Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) are known to decrease the thermal efficiency of engines. The Miller cycle has received attention for its role in emission reduction and thermal efficiency improvement without the use of any additional devices. This paper is devoted to the theoretical study of the Miller cycle. Miller effects with turbo- charging and intercooling are considered. In addition, for the application of the Miller cycle to real-world cycle, the difference between Early Miller and Late Miller is examined. Further, the effect of engine speed is investigated for the improvement of the Miller cycle functionality. The Miller cycle is a practical realization of the Atkinson cycle and various inlet valve close timing is used to adjust the effective compression ratio. IN addition, turbo-charging is required to compensate for the loss of thermal efficiency, followed by intercooling to chill the air. The improvement of turbo-charging efficiency and effectiveness of intercooler increases the utility of the Miller cycle. Early Miller and Late Miller have varying characteristics owing to the influence of the valve area, expansion of charged air, and the back flow of air, on a real-world cycle. The practicability of using Early Miller or Late Miller depending on the engine speed is investigated.
