Abstract
The fact that the stability of the propulsion shaft system is crucial when designing a ship has led to many studies on the proper alignment of the shaft, in particular under quasi-static conditions. The propeller weight contributes significantly to increase the local loads of the stern tube bearings supporting the propeller shaft. The relative inclination angle between the shaft and the bearing, in general, determines the degree and distribution of the local loads. When the propeller force in the hydrodynamic transient state that leads the shaft descends, thereby causing the eccentric thrust to act downwards, the local load can be significantly deflected toward the after-end of the after-stern tube bearing. This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of the propeller shafts and evaluates its stability, using a 50,000 dead weight tonnage (DWT) oil/chemical carrier. The results revealed that the behavior of the shaft was influenced by the hydraulic propeller force with increasing engine load. The proposed method proved to be meaningful and practical as it shows similar results to previous studies where direct measuring at the adjacent of the propeller was carried out.
