이 논문에서는 도시성장에 관한 우리나라의 상황을 고려한 가운데 Zipf의 법칙을 Gibrat의 법칙으로부터 발생하는 유일한 균제상태의 분포로 파악한 Gabaix(1999)의 해석이 한국의 도시성장과정에서도 적용될 수 있는지를 실증적으로 확인해보고자 한다. 우선 1990년대 초 이후 우리나라의 도시규모분포에 있어서 Zipf의 법칙이 지켜지는지 여부를 검토하고 도시성장속도의 공간적 격차를 이용하여 그 결과를 해석해 본다. 이어서 Ioannides and Overman(2003)이 사용한 비모수적 추정법(non-parametric estimation)을 통하여 국지적 Zipf 지수(local Zipf exponent)를 추정함으로써 우리나라의 경우에도 Gabaix의 해석이 적용될 수 있는지를 검토해 본다.
Abstract
This paper tests the validity of Zipf's Law for cities in Korea using the data for cities for 1992-2003 under the consideration of the spatial difference in urban growth rates. Specifically, this paper investigate the validity of Zipf's Law for cities based on the Gabaix's (1999) explanation which shows that if different cities grow randomly with the same expected growth rate and the same variance (Gibrat's Law), the limit distribution of city size will converge so as to obey Zipf's Law. We use a nonparametric procedure to estimate the Gibrat's Law for city growth processes.
