약물은 없어서는 안 되는 중요한 필수품이나, 때로는 약물 관련 유해반응(adverse drug reaction)을 일으켜 오히려 독이 될 때가 있다. 약물유해반응은 예측 가능한 A형과 예측 불가능한 B형으로 나뉘는데 일반적인 사람에게는 반응이 나타나지 않는 용량에 유해반응이 나타나는 경우 B형 약물유해반응이 발생했다고 하고 약물과민반응(drug hypersensitivity reaction)이라고도 한다. 약물과민반응에는 면역학적인 기전을 통해 일어나는 약물알레르기(drug allergy)가 포함되며 약물과민반응과 약물알레르기는 서로 혼용되어 사용되기도 한다.
