알레르기비염은 전 세계적으로 가장 흔한 알레르기질환 중 하나로서 흡입 알레르겐에 대한 면역글로블린 E (Immunoglobulin E, IgE) 혹은 Th2 매개 면역반응으로 인해 발생하며 콧물, 코막힘, 재채기, 코 가려움증 등의 증상을 특징으로 한다.1,2 알레르기비염에서 항원특이면역요법(allergen-specific immunotherapy, AIT)은 흡입 알레르겐을 반복적으로 인체에 투여하여 면역관용을 유도하고 자연경과를 바꿈으로써 증상을 완화시키고 천식 발생을 예방하는 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있으며, 현재 국내외 진료 일선에서 시행 중인 면역요법에는 피하면역요법(subcutaneous immunotherapy, SCIT)과 설하면역요법(Sublingual immunotherapy, SLIT)이 있다.3,4 알레르기비염 환자를 대상으로 하는 임상시험은 다른 질환과 마찬가지로 이중맹검 무작위배정의 형태로 진행되며1,2 치료 효과 판정 시 환자의 주관적인 증상 점수(항원유발검사 포함)를 주로 사용하기 때문에 연구 결과의 신뢰성과 객관성을 확보하기 위해 이중 맹검의 중요성은 더욱 크다고 할 수 있다.
