2000년 이후 세계화에 따른 한국 자동차산업의 환경변화 속에서 한국 자동차부품업체들은 이러한 변화에 대한 대응전략으로서 해외진출전략과 수출확대전략을 취하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 본 연구는 한국의 자동차 부품업체들 중에서 해외진출전략과 수출확대전략을 전략을 취하는 기업들이 어떠한 특성을 가진 기업인가를 분석하고자 2000년부터 2009년까지의 10년간을 대상으로 한국신용평가에서 제공하는 KIS VALUE Ⅲ와 한국자동차공업협동조합의 자동차산업편람의 기업자료를 결합하여 실증분석 하였다. 해외투자 의사결정에 있어서는, 첫째, 해외투자에 있어 매몰비용이 존재하여 전기의 해외투자 의사결정이 지속적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 수익성 내지는 생산성이 높고, 연령, 기업규모 등에서 유리한 업체가 주로 해외진출의 대상이 되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 생산성 수준과의 높은 관련성에도 불구하고 생산성 증가율 및 R&D/매출액 비율은 해외진출에 아무런 영향을 미치지 못하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 두 가지 사실은 해외진출이 장래의 기술력 향상 잠재력보다는 현재의 기술력 수준에 보다 민감하게 반응하고 있음을 보여준다고 해석할 수 있다. 수출 의사결정에서는, 첫째, 매몰비용의 존재가 명확히 나타났다. 둘째, 기업규모를 제외한 거의 대부분의 변수는 수출의사결정에 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났으며, 셋째 대규모기업보다는 소규모기업이 보다 수출에 보다 적극적으로 대응하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This paper analyses the globalization process of the auto-parts firms based on the environmental changes in the Korean auto industry since 2000. We have examined not only the outward FDI and export as the strategies for the auto-parts firms, but the characteristics of firms as the determinants of those strategies. We have constructed the firm-level micro database of the Korean auto-parts firms for 2000-2009 by merging the KIS-VALUE and KAICA dataset including profitability(ROE), productivity, age, capital-labor ratio, and so on. The main findings in outward FDI decision are as follows: First, sunk cost has strong effects on outward FDI, as lagged outward FDI dummies indicate significantly positive coefficient. Second, profitability, productivity level, age, and size have positive effects on outward FDI. Third, in spite of the significance of the level of productivity, we have failed to find the significance of the growth of productivity and R&D. It can be interpreted that outward FDI are very sensitive to the present level of technology, but not to potential technology growth. We have also found the following results in export decision: First, sunk cost is the important factor in export decision. Second, we do not find the relevance of the other firm characteristics except firm size.
