초록
This research aims to help young students realistically recognize intensifying environmental issues and actively experience practical solutions. As a paradigm of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), its objective is to cultivate practical sustainability competencies beyond theoretical knowledge, by enabling students to directly cultivate bio-leather and create sustainable products. The study combines theoretical investigation through literature review with empirical product research. It includes experiments on fruit-based bio-leather cultivation and sustainable design development utilizing SCOBY. First, based on previous studies, we propose a method to cultivate baby SCOBY using readily available fruits, eliminating the need for a mother SCOBY. Our results showed that baby SCOBY was most abundantly produced when the total solution to pineapple ratio was 1:30, without a mother SCOBY. The solution consisted of 11% kombucha concentrate, 12% sugar, 27% black tea, and 50% water. We concluded that baby SCOBY could be cultivated more effectively because, in the absence of mother SCOBY, it could exclusively absorb the sugar nutrient. This allows for easy creation of SCOBY bio-leather without the time and financial burden of acquiring mother SCOBY. Second, educational samples using SCOBY leather were crafted with techniques such as painting, foiling, and beading. Accessories were designed based on idea sketches from the researcher and students, and produced using traditional Korean patterns in a tessellation method to achieve zero waste. These educational samples are expected to establish a foundation for elementary and middle school students to understand and practice the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Abstract
This research aims to help young students realistically recognize intensifying environmental issues and actively experience practical solutions. As a paradigm of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), its objective is to cultivate practical sustainability competencies beyond theoretical knowledge, by enabling students to directly cultivate bio-leather and create sustainable products. The study combines theoretical investigation through literature review with empirical product research.
