본 연구는 시장집중도의 변화가 경쟁도에 미치는 영향을 이용하여 외환위기 전후 한국의 은행산업 경쟁구조 변화를 분석하였다. 시장집중도는 CRn과 HHI를 이용하여 측정하였으며, 경쟁도는 Panzar-Rosse 모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 외환위기 이전기간인 1990-1996년은 시장 집중도가 하락추세를 보이며 독점 또는 카르텔 경쟁구조를 지니는 것으로 분석되었으며, 외환위기 이후기간인 1999-2008 년은 시장집중도의 상승추세와 함께 독점적 경쟁구조를 나타내는 것으로 분석되었다. 따라서 우리나라의 은행산업은 시장집중도가 증가함에 따라 경쟁도가 상승하는 것으로 분석되었다.
Abstract
This paper examines the hypothesis that states market concentration and consolidation have weakened competition, stability and escalated market power of banks before and after currency crisis in Korea. Market concentration is measured using CRn (concentration ratio) and HHI (Herfindahl - Hirschman Index). In addition, competition is measured by the application of Panzar-Rosse model, which estimates a model of reduced form revenue equation, based on yearly aggregate data of two periods: 1990 to 1996 and 1999 to 2008. Empirical outcomes indicate that Korean banking industry is consistent with monopoly or cartel during the pre-crisis period and monopolistic competition during the post-crisis period. Therefore, Korean banking industry is shown that the increase in competition is followed by the higher market concentration.
