Abstract

This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on the gender gap in domestic labor hours between married women with children and their male spouses using data from the 4th to 8th waves (2012–2021) of the Korean Women and Family Panel Survey (n=24,203). To estimate causal effects, a difference-in-differences (DiD) approach was employed, treating married women with children as the treatment group and their male spouses as the comparison group. The analysis revealed that, following the onset of COVID-19, married women with children experienced a significantly greater increase in domestic labor, housework, and carework hours compared to their male spouses. These findings indicate that the pandemic exacerbated gender inequality in the distribution of domestic labor. The study contributes quasi-experimental evidence on the effect of COVID-19 on the gender gap in domestic labor hours by employing the DiD method. Furthermore, it highlights the unintended consequences of policies for containing the pandemic, demonstrating that Korean society has borne the social cost of widening gender disparities in the domestic sphere.
