Abstract
Raiseboring machine (RBM) has been widely used in deep shaft excavation in rock mass. In Korea, this method has been applied to ventilation shaft, hydropower, and oil storage cavern by downward blasting enlargement after reaming of 2.5~3.5 m diameter holes. Full face RBM is a method that excavates the whole diameter over 6 m at a time through large reamer, but there is no application case in Korea yet. This paper discusses the ground risk assessment methods and outcomes which have been applied to ventilation shafts excavation in an international railway tunnel project for the first time. When full face RBM is excavated, rock mass can be exposed to various risks such as wedge sliding, wall breakdown, rock fall, stress induced spalling and so on. Quantitative evaluation of raisebore quality index by McCracken & Stacey was conducted using detailed geotechnical interpretation results on the site, and risks were assessed with this index. As sequential rock support cannot be applied during the RBM excavation, stand-up time of rock mass were evaluated whether shaft wall could be stable. Using the existing RBM case database and design guidelines, and wedge analysis, various risks were assessed. To reduce possible assessed risks, several important risk mitigation measures were planned such as surface grouting, groundwater relief holes and TSL (thin spray liner) wall coating. In addition, several other factors to be considered for full face RBM excavation were discussed such as shaft monitoring method, ground reinforcement for soil layer and reamer installation. Full face RBM method has many advantages with noticeably short construction time and safe construction environment. This method can be applied for various shafts in complicated underground excavation through proper risk assessment and planning in appropriate ground.
