Abstract
Adler recognizes that the difference between humans and animals is radical in kind. According to him, the uniqueness of human nature lies in its intellect as an immaterial power. The intellectual operates as follows. First, whether an object is perceived, human beings can conceptually think, which is the ability to grasp and understand it as a specific kind. Conceptual thought, as the basis of reasoning or judging, is distinguished from the perceptual abstraction of animals that can recognize only directly perceived objects. Second, humans can exercise propositional languages. They can develop intellect as a conceptual thought by learning various propositional languages and language skills. Third, human beings are the only beings who have freedom of choice. Through freedom of choice, humans can determine their own destiny and control their instincts or irrational desires adequately. Reading education contributes to realizing human nature as an intellectual being. Reading enables us to develop our conceptual thoughts and broad perspectives and further form moral characters to live ‘a good life as a whole’. Human beings are the only beings with intellect and reading education essentially aimed at developing their intellect. Therefore, reading education can realize human nature.
