Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of positive behavior support using contingency mapping on problem behavior and task engagement in children with autism in an integrated preschool. Three children with autism who exhibited severe behavioral problem participated in this study. Based on the results from the functional assessment designed to yield a useful understanding of their problem behavior, multicomponent positive behavior intervention plans were developed. Especially, contingency mapping, a visual support strategy, was used to teach alternative replacement behaviors that serve the same function as the problem behavior. Multiple probe baseline design across subjects was used and the children's problem behavior and task engagement were measured using partial interval recording method. The results are as follows: (1) the positive behavior support using contingency mapping reduced problem behavior for all participants, (2) the positive behavior support using contingency mapping increased task engagement for all participants, and (3) the effects of the positive behavior support using contingency mapping was maintained after withdrawal of intervention.
