Abstract

As the aging population rapidly increases, the management of chronic diseases among older adults has become increasingly important, leading to a rise in medication use. Along with this, medication misuse and side effects have emerged as serious social issues. In response to this background, this study investigates the use of NFC-enabled over-the-counter (OTC) drug packaging for efficient medication guidance for older adults. A consumer survey was conducted among older adults, followed by the development of a prototype and a usability evaluation using a 5-point Likert scale. The evaluation results showed that, in terms of gender, most males scored higher, while in terms of age, scores tended to decrease as age increased. However, no statistically significant differences were found in either gender or age groups. In terms of education level, higher educational attainment was generally associated with higher scores. The evaluation also showed that working adults tended to give higher scores across most categories. Despite variations in gender, age, education, and occupation, high scores were observed across most usability areas. This study highlights the integration of packaging and technology to provide effective medication guidance for older adults. However, the study's sample size of 54 participants limits the generalizability of the findings. Future research should address a broader range of environments and backgrounds. It is expected that the results of this study will serve as valuable foundational data for the use of NFC in OTC drug packaging, as well as in the design of packaging solutions for older adults in general.
