Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of mother’s attachment style and socioemotional stress on the child attachment security formation. As an attempt to do a comparative study between Korea and Canada, fifty mother-child dyads were participated and observed when the children were 51 to 84 months. The Attachment Style Questionnaire, the Parental Stress Inventory, The Beck Depression Inventory were used to measure mothers’ characteristics. Separation-Reunion Classifications and Randolph attachment disorder questionnaire(RADQ) were used to measure children’ attachment security. The models tested in this study proposed to determine whether maternal characteristics were linked to subsequent their children’s attachment security using Amos structural equation analysis. The results of this study confirmed and extended evidences that child attachment security is significantly related to maternal attachment style through maternal stress. In addition, no direct pathway exists between mother’s attachment style and child attachment security.
